Your Moment
Give yourself a number, 1 to 10. Then give me 10 minutes. And when you are back, give yourself another one. The gap between those two is the whole thing.
What happens in those 10 minutes
You give yourself a number
Before anything else. 1 is heavy and flat, 10 is awake and here. Keep it.
We breathe together
4 in through your nose, hold for 4, 8 long out through your mouth. Three rounds. After that your breath slows on its own — you are not doing it, it is happening.
Your heart, the centre of your chest
That is where all your attention goes. Feel what is going on in there, and just watch it. Do not drown in it.
And then your brain
There is an exchange running between the two, both directions. Your heart tells your brain what it needs to know, so it can prepare the future you want.
Why it works
A long, released exhale downshifts your nervous system. That is measured: in a head-to-head trial at Stanford, exhale-emphasized breathing beat both box breathing and mindfulness on mood and heart rate. (Balban et al., Cell Reports Medicine, 2023) That is exactly what the 8 seconds are for.
And the number at the start is not decoration. It is the only honest way to know whether something works for you. Look again afterwards — the difference is yours.
And then?
Come back tomorrow. Same 10 minutes, same two numbers. After a week you will see something you cannot see in a single sitting: where you start from, and how far you move.
Write the numbers down yourself for now. I am building the part where the page does it for you.
